ABOUT OUR FARM
The
history of the Lehne farm began in 1938 with the marriage of Myron
Lehne and Helen Woodruff. Myron worked
for Dillard nurseryman, C. E. Moyer,
and the young couple dreamed of one day starting their own nursery.
They realized this dream in the early 1940’s with the purchase of
the first 10 acres on Cleveland Rapids Road in Garden Valley. Later
additional acreage was acquired, bringing Myron and Helen’s farm to
a total of 45 acres.
In the early 1970’s Myron and Helen decided to retire, turning over
the farm to their two sons, Ray and Norm.
The Norm
Lehne Garden and Orchard began
in 1974. Norm and Cinda sold vegetables out of their large family
garden. As the demand for fresh produce increased, they expanded the
garden. Norm and Cinda also decided to plant a variety of fruit
trees and eventually these were available to u-pick customers.

The farm is located just a few miles outside of Roseburg, Oregon, in
beautiful Garden Valley. Customers can take a leisurely drive into
the country to pick a wide variety of farm-fresh, vine-ripe produce.
Upon arrival, customers will find that the Garden is
carefully maintained to be as weed free as possible. The Orchard is
pruned so that ladders are not needed for picking the fruit.
In
addition, Norm Lehne Garden & Orchards
is
proud to be one of the only farms to
use pure well water as the only source for irrigation.
Customers
are valued and they will be treated with integrity and courtesy.
Norm and Cinda
also value their family farm and will carefully manage it in order to
maintain its productivity, quality of products, and long-term
sustainability. They see themselves as stewards of a natural resource
that will one day be managed by another generation.
Norm and Cinda
Welcome You!

was
taught by Master Food Preserver, Ed Hoffman, on Saturday, September
26, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. He demonstrated how
to make sauerkraut and told us all we need to know about the
process. Printed recipes and instructions were provided. The

At the
hands-on portion of the "Sauerkraut Time!" class, Ed assisted us
as we made 1 gallon of sauerkraut. The cost for the hands-on
class was $5.00. We provided the cabbage and canning
salt.

OSU

was free and open to the public.
Family Fun at the Farm, held
Saturday, August 1, 2009, and featuring Shasta Ray and the DownHome Band, was a terrific success. If you'd like to hear
them again just go to Charlie's BBQ on Harvard Ave. in Roseburg on
Thursday evenings. They regularly play there.

2008 Events
"September Serenade" with Shasta Ray and Down Home
Band last Sunday was an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon. Thanks to
all who attended. We will probably make this an annual event.

Our "Crazy for Corn!" event with Kris and Rick Wetherbee was
a huge success.
We learned Kris and Rick's favorite ways to grill corn.
Later we sampled the taste differences between several
techniques, as well as the three flavored butters: Cumin-Lime,
Ginger-Curry, and Lemon-Thyme.
The Corn & Black Bean Salad with Rosemary-Balsamic Dressing
and the Roasted Corn, Pepper & Avocado Salsa were delicious!
We still have a few copies of these
recipes so when you are at the farm please ask for one.

Here is an article that Janice Bunyard submitted to the Roseburg Beacon, a new local newspaper,
celebrating our event.
Lehne Farm Hosts a Three Alarm Salsa Event
On
Saturday, September 15, Norm Lehne Garden & Orchards hosted “Ole!
Let’s Celebrate Salsa” the second event this season featuring local
produce & presenters. About 80-100 spectators attended the free
event. It was hard to tell the attendees from the u-pick customers
that were coming & going & stopping by to take a look.
The salsa specialists shared their recipes with an eager crowd.
Barbara & Harvey Hall prepared a mild salsa for the faint of heart.
Brothers Scott & Ted LaLande had double duty with a mellow Pico de
Gallo & a hot Baja Fire salsa. Mark & Rise Briggs told us how to
brew 50 gallons of their very, very hot F.I.T.H. Salsa. For a
refreshing finish Norm & Cinda Lehne cooled things down with their
Melon Salsa.

OSU Master Food Preservers Ed Hoffman & Paulette Zwirn were on hand
to share their knowledge on the importance of safe canning methods
when preparing low-acid foods.
Then there was the tasting. One salsa was savory & mild, another
mellow. Next a hot recipe
followed by a three alarm burnout. The melon salsa offered a cooling
finish. The Lehne’s provided a wonderful hand-out
with all of the recipes.
Bunyard’s Barnyard Nursery was on hand to talk about the savory
herbs used in the recipes & had an extensive selection available to
purchase.
The
whole event finished with a Salsa dancing demo.
Local dance artists, Ben & Sonya Escalera, did their fancy footwork
on a large plywood
dance floor on the front lawn. Then they gave a mini lesson to the
few who were bold enough to join in.
All in
all, a spectacular event, well attended in a beautiful country
setting. I can’t wait to see what
the Lehne’s have in store for us next season. For more information
